USEFUL INFORMATION ABOUT ATHENS
Perhaps the most iconic site in Athens. The Acropolis dominates the city center. With a car rental in Athens, you can easily reach the archaeological site and admire up close the Parthenon, the Propylaea, the Temple of Athena Nike, and the Erechtheion.
The Acropolis is a masterpiece of classical architecture and offers a fascinating journey through the history of ancient Greece.
At the foot of the Acropolis lies the picturesque neighborhood of Plaka. Park your vehicle and get lost in the narrow streets with traditional buildings, small shops, and charming cafes. Plaka is considered the oldest neighborhood in Athens and maintains its traditional atmosphere with neoclassical buildings, Byzantine churches, and museums. It’s perfect for a stroll and to enjoy a coffee or a meal at one of the many tavernas.
Adjacent to Plaka, Monastiraki is famous for its antique shops and flea markets. With your car, you can easily reach Monastiraki Square and explore the surrounding alleys. Here you’ll also find Adrianou Street, one of the busiest commercial streets with many shops, as well as the Ancient Agora and the Roman Agora. A walk through Monastiraki is like taking a journey through the history of Athens.
The heart of Athens beats at Syntagma Square. Leave your car in the parking lot and admire the Parliament building, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and the National Garden. The square has been the epicenter of many important events in modern Greek history and often hosts events and concerts. Most pedestrian streets leading to the city’s most popular attractions also start from here.
Kolonaki is also accessible by car. There you’ll find chic boutiques, wonderful restaurants and cafes, as well as Filiki Etaireia Square. Kolonaki is known as the most cosmopolitan area of Athens and attracts numerous visitors for its high-fashion stores, art galleries, and upscale restaurants.
Drive to the base of Lycabettus Hill and take the funicular or walk to the top for a panoramic view of Athens. Lycabettus is the highest hill in the city center and is home to the church of St. George, a theater, and a restaurant.
