USEFUL INFORMATION ABOUT KEFALONIA
Kefalonia offers diverse accommodation options across its distinct regions. In the vibrant capital Argostoli, you’ll find modern hotels and boutique apartments overlooking the bustling harbor where sea turtles regularly appear. The cosmopolitan Skala provides luxury beachfront resorts, while Fiskardo charms visitors with its exclusive boutique hotels in restored Venetian buildings. For a more authentic experience, consider staying in the traditional villages of Assos or Sami, where family-run guesthouses offer genuine Kefalonian hospitality with spectacular views.
The island’s entertainment scene perfectly balances traditional Greek culture with modern attractions. Argostoli’s Lithostroto Street comes alive at night with its bars and tavernas, while the waterfront hosts regular cultural events. Skala and Sami offer vibrant nightlife with beachfront bars and live music venues. For a more traditional evening, visit the mountain villages during their summer festivals, where you can experience authentic Greek music, dance, and local wine. Water sports enthusiasts will find excellent facilities in Makris Gialos and Xi Beach, while cinema buffs can visit the numerous locations featured in Hollywood films.
Kefalonia’s beaches rank among the world’s finest. The iconic Myrtos Beach, with its dramatic white cliffs and turquoise waters, offers an unforgettable spectacle. Antisamos Beach combines crystal-clear waters with lush surroundings, perfect for snorkeling and swimming. The unique red sand of Xi Beach creates a striking contrast with the white clay cliffs, while Petani Beach rivals Myrtos in beauty but with fewer crowds. Makris Gialos and Platis Gialos offer excellent facilities and water sports, ideal for families. With your rental car, you can also discover countless secluded coves accessible only by road.
Kefalonian gastronomy offers unique flavors that reflect its rich culinary heritage. The island is famous for its Robola wine, produced in the renowned Robola Winery cooperative. Try local specialties like Kefalonian meat pie, fresh fish cooked bianco-style, and the unique aliada (skordalia with cod). The village of Fiskardo is renowned for its upscale seafood restaurants, while mountain tavernas in villages like Troianata and Faraklata serve traditional dishes using local ingredients. Don’t miss the chance to taste Kefalonian thyme honey, award-winning feta from local producers, and the distinctive local dessert mandola (caramelized almonds).
